Angry hooker

I contributed a short column to the very first PROUD newsletter in the summer of 2015. Here’s a quick ’n dirty translation:I’m a prostitute and I want the same rights other people have. Politicians tell me I only think this because I am a ‘happy hooker’. They say: you have a good life, but what if you hadn’t?

I don’t understand. Are rights something for happy people only? If you think your job sucks, do you suddenly lose interest in fair pay? If you’re having a bad day, is it suddenly okay when police barges into your home without your permission?

It’s barely possible to work legally and independently as a sex worker. Police officers ask us as ‘check up’ whether we have orgasms in our private lives. The mayor of Amsterdam wants to abolish privacy laws so he can get access to our medical files.

Members of parliament want to criminalise our friends, partners, clients and employees. Insurance companies refuse to provide us services, our landlords evict us, our neighours call us names and the public prosecutor calls us “pieces of meat”.

I am not a happy hooker at all. I am furious. It is time to claim our rights.”
